Milk Distributor

Milk distributors distribute and sell dairy products to retail, food service, commercial and home delivery customers.

 

Tasks & duties

Milk distributors may do some or all of the following:

  • carry out stocktakes and order new supplies of stock on a daily basis
  • unload empty crates and load stock onto trucks at the milk depot
  • collect, sort and bank money and tokens taken during their run
  • enter account information into their accounts system and do other office administration
  • organise debt collection
  • hire, train and work with staff
  • carry out marketing strategies and promotions organised by manufacturers or themselves
  • keep their trucks up to Land Transport Safety Authority standards

 

Skills & knowledge

Milk distributors need to have:

  • knowledge of the products they sell
  • awareness of relevant health and safety and transport regulations
  • sales skills
  • driving skills
  • good communication skills
  • customer service skills
  • business and management skills
  • basic computer knowledge
  • maths skills
  • organisational skills

 

Entry requirements

All milk distributors and milk distributor assistants must have a goods and services licence. Depending on the size of the delivery vehicle, a class 2 driver's licence may also be necessary.
To own a milk distribution franchise you must be able to meet the requirements of the franchise agreement.

 

Secondary education

At least three years of secondary school education is preferred to become a milk distributor and useful subjects include maths and English.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. After purchasing a milk run, milk distributors are often trained on the job by the previous owner. Milk distributors who purchase a franchise like Meadow Fresh or Anchor must attend ongoing training and development programmes.

  • banking and handling money

  • running a business
